Lasik Eye Surgery-check Out Your Options

by Staci James

Lasik Eye Surgery is an option for most people wanting the correct vision problems. With Lasik corrections most people no longer need glasses or contacts prescriptions.

Lasik eye surgery was only invented or the 1950s and since then there have been astounding leaps forward in technology. As a result there are many forms of Lasik eye surgery, and you’re qualified Lasik eye surgeon will be up to tell you which method is the best suited to your eyes.

About the procedure: before the laser goes against the eye a preliminary examination of the surface is mapped. This gives the surgeon a plan to work with during it the actual procedure.

To make things safer the surgery is commonly done in a specialist Lasik eye centre. Antibiotics and anaesthetic eye drops are placed into your eye numbing for the procedure. A laser cuts the surface of your cornea and a flap is drawn back. The cornea is adjusted for your prescription and the flap is replaced. This treatment should only take about 15 minutes per eye being treated.

After the procedure has been finished the patient is left to rest for about 15 to 20 minutes. At this time their eye or eyes will be re-examined by the Lasik eye doctor. If everything is in order the patient is allowed to go home. The next day the patient returns to the Lasik eye surgery and has the all important second eye examination. Most people are back to work within a few days of the surgery. The only thing they have to do is be a little careful and put a few eye drops in their eyes daily for a couple of weeks.

Your eyes continue to develop until at least 20 years of age and from the age of about 45, your eyes naturally begin to have trouble focusing. So the recommended age for most people for Lasik eye surgery is between the ages of 20 and 45.

Even if you have Lasik eye surgery it is likely as you age into your fifties you will need reading glasses, just like normal people. Most eye prescriptions are treatable with Lasik eye surgery; however you will need to be assessed for your suitability by a fully qualified Lasik eye doctor..

Just like any surgery there are some risks associated with Lasik eye surgery. Probably one of the most commonly reported is simply a period of dry eyes after the surgery which is treated with eye drops.

Because the procedure is done with an anaesthetic eye drops, the procedure itself is not particularly painful. Most patients do have some discomfort in the first 3 to 4 days, but this is easy to treat with medication. There is always the potential for infection, as is the case with most surgeries, but instances are low.

There may be some corrections needed after the surgery but this is uncommon.

Lasik eye surgery can produce a freedom from glasses and contact lenses for many people.

How to Choose the Right Lasik Surgeon

by Kevin McClury

One of the more popular medical procedures today is Lasik eye surgery. So much so, that the Lasik procedure seems to be so routine that you shouldn’t worry about any complications. However, since this is a surgical procedure, which can affect your livelihood, you must carefully choose your surgeon. Because of this daunting challenge, this article will explain how to pick a Lasik eye surgeon in simple terms.

In order to ensure you get the best possible doctor that you can afford, you should meet with four eye surgeons. This is imperative since there will be a huge difference between their experience and skill levels. To find 4 Lasik eye surgeons, you should ask your family and co-workers if they can recommend someone. If that fails, you can perform an Internet search to locate potential surgeons.

After you have selected the surgeons, you will want to ensure they are medically certified to operate in your state. This can be done by calling up your states Medical Board of Examiners. Please ensure you complete this step, as you want your surgeon to be certified.

After completing this step, you will visit the surgeons offices for a consultation. This is your opportunity to interview the surgeon. You should walk out of the office feeling comfortable and confident of the surgeons abilities.

Of course, you may now be wondering, what am I supposed to do at the consultation? First, you will gather additional information about how the surgeon performs this procedure. Don’t be surprised if the surgeon tells you that Lasik isn’t for you. Lasik eye surgery is not always a cure all eye surgery.

Second, the consultation allows you to get a feeling for how the surgeon works. Does he seem genuinely interested in your concerns? Does he explain the possible complications? Or does he make everything just sound too routine?

Once you have gone on 4 consultations, you need to choose a surgeon. This is much easier than it sounds. You simply pick one that you feel the most comfortable with.

Before we conclude, we have one additional piece of advice. While the surgeons fee structure is important, please do not let it be the only reason you choose a surgeon. If you fail to heed this piece of advice, you may regret it later (in the form of additional surgery or frustration).
