About Lasik Surgery: What To Expect

If you suffer from poor vision, you know that relying on glasses or contacts to see clearly can be quite an inconvenience. You’ve probably always wondered what it would be like to be able to wake up in the morning and see clearly without reaching for your glasses. In the past, a person who wore glasses or contacts could expect to have to wear them indefinitely. But nowadays, we have Lasik eye surgery. Lasik is a relatively simple procedure that can be performed in about 15 minutes, rarely involves pain, and results can be noticed almost immediately. It’s easy to see why Lasik surgery has become so popular.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, or Lasik for short, gently reshapes the cornea by removing microscopic bits of tissue using a cool non-thermal beam of light. While a good result is less surgeon dependent than older forms of refractive surgery such as RK, it is still a very delicate and precise procedure. You’ll therefore want to make sure you seek out a highly experienced, well trained Lasik surgeon in your area. Things to check for are state licensure and board certification. During your consultation you’ll want to get information about how many procedures they have performed, what the complication rate is and what their policy is regarding any follow up care that may be needed.

Prior to having Lasik surgery, a thorough eye examination is performed including photographing and mapping your cornea with a corneal topographer. This ensures the most precise results possible. Your doctor also needs to rule out any disqualifying eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and severe dry eye disease. Additionally, certain degenerative and autoimmune diseases can disqualify you as a Lasik candidate so your doctor will require a thorough medical history including any medications you are currently taking.

If you are deemed a good candidate, you will then be scheduled for your surgery. You will be awake during the procedure but will not feel anything as your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops. You’ll lie down in a reclining chair where you will be positioned under the laser. The doctor will then place an eyelid speculum under your eyelids to hold your eye open during the procedure. You are then instructed to look at a light and most likely won’t even realize that the corneal reshaping is taking place as all you’ll notice are pulses of light. Afterward, more drops or ointment will be placed in your eyes and you will relax for a little while before going home to rest. Most surgeons will perform Lasik on both eyes the same day.

Now that you know a little more about Lasik surgery, you may want to consider getting a consultation. The results can be life changing for many people, will you be one of them?
